Lorna Willumsen, who has died aged 57, spent a lifetime trying to help others. Her work as a Samaritan and later as a counsellor was outstanding, and as she used to say: "I have never had a suicide."
She married at 19 and had three children, Guy, Colin and Susan, but eventually the marriage failed. There followed a period of real poverty, staying with friends and just scraping by until finally she got a job as a counsellor with Glasgow Caledonian University. She then helped start a counselling course at Glasgow University but was unable to take the post due to ill health.
It was while working at Caledonian University that she met her second husband, Alan. They began to realise as they talked that they had met before and it was at the primary school that they both attended.

On her birthday in January 2007 she was in hospital for tests where she was told that she had inoperable stomach cancer and had six months to live. Willumsen refused chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and went the natural route but died in Lady Home Hospital, Douglas, South Lanarkshire.
