The 1891 census gives Herberts age as 17 years. Address is 115 Stanley Rd Stratford. His occupation is given as Paperhanger & Plasterer. This was not known in the family. Also his birth is given as Cambridge Middlesex. The family always believed his birthplace was Homerton Middlesex

Herbert seved his apprenticship as a Cooper with Shuters Chippingdale and Colyers. After serving his apprentiship he worked for Henry Roberts Cooperage for 41 years until his retirement. On his retirement Henry Roberts gave Herbert 10 shillings per week pension. Even after his retirement he was asked back when the second world war started as most of the younger employees were called up to serve their country.
