[2378] Canon Cornelius James Keens was known as "the great church builder" . He was responsible for founding eight Catholic churches in central London. He became Senior Canon of the Archdiocese of Westminster.

He was also a composer of music and amongst his best works are "Ave Maria" and "Cor Jesu in Agonia factum" and "Vini Sancte Spiritus" which is sung on the Feast of Pentecost.

The Church 'Star of the Sea' in Tilbury (foundation stones laid in June 1906) was built in memory of Canon Keens who had built the
school chapel in 1887 and many other churches in the area including St Thomas' at Grays.
